Web site structure

Web site

Web site is a collection of an interrelated web page. Elements contained by a web page are, text, audio, graphics, animation, picture, video etc. Structure of web siteis meaning that how the web pages will be set and also how these pages will be linked.Structure is most important for a good website. Before building structure making process is done.

Here the processes of going one page to another page, first what page will be seen by visitors are defined.
The structure of a web site is called hyper textual. It is like a network. Build with multiple web pages. In web site structure pages are connected by hyperlink. By these one or more pages is accessible from one page.

Structure of web site is divided in 3 stages.

  1. Index page or Home page
  2.  Main sections or site index
  3.  Sub sections or Content

Home page

In a web site the first page is called home page. It is a page of an institution or a person. It loads at first.  Here index is given. Information is published by this. Site index is found from here.

Site index

Here one will find information on a specific topic. From here one can visit sub sections.

Sub sections

In a specific topic details information is found from here.

Basing the web site property web site structure is 4 types:

  1. Sequence site structure
  2. Tree or Hierarchical site structure
  3. Web linked site structure
  4.  Hybrid structure

Sequence site structure

It is the easiest web site design structure. Here information of web page is linked serial wise. Here sequence order or logical sequence is followed. Here data will show alphabetic wise or index wise. Example: Books and magazines websites are built by following sequence structure.
Sequence structure has 2 types.

  • Straight linear sequence site structure
  • Linear sequence site structure

 Straight linear sequence site structure

Here web pages are linked sequentially .There will be no extra auxiliary page.

Web site structure

Linear sequence site structure

In this structure the pages are linked sequentially too but description of some pages is saved in other pages. Usually one or more words are hyperlinked from a paragraph of one page. From this one can find details on this word specifically. This structure is used in programming logical sites, training sites.

Web site structure

Tree or Hierarchical site structure

It is the best system for representing information in web sites. By this web pages can be saved up to one or more levels.
The first page is called home page or root node. It is easier to understand. Large companies use this system.

Tree structure sites are two types.

A) Simple hub and spoke structure

B) Complex hierarchical site structure

Simple hub and spoke structure

Simple hub structure is also called star structure. In this structure after home page there is only a single layer where information can be saved. That is why it is called single tier hierarchy.

Web site structure

Complex hierarchical site structure

Here web pages are linked more than one layer after home page. That is why it is called multi tired hierarchical structure.
In this case if we build page at most third layer it will be better because more layer will increase the complexity of data searching.

Web site structure

Web linked site structure

It is a non linear structure and the most complex structure. This structure creates a link between pages which works as a structure like a network. It complex to build but it is easily usable. By this one page to another page browsing becomes easier.

Hybrid structure

Multiple types of site structures are used to build hybrid site structure. If web site is build with only a single type of site structure that does not makes the site perfect to use. By using multiple types of site structure increases the usability of web site.
