IP address

Full form of IP address is internet protocol address. The computers which are connected with internet has an unique address. This address is called internet protocol address or IP address. For data transfer IP address is used as  addresses of sender and receiver. Millions of computers can be identified uniquely by these addresses.

Two versions of IP address is used. These are IPV 4 and IPV 6 .

Example of internet address

IPV4 address

In IPV4 addressing system 32 bits is used for representing each addresses. These 32 bits are parted into 4 octets. By ' • ' sign each of the octets are divided.

From the I address first two octets (first 16 bits) is the network ID of the address and next two octets (last 16 bits ) is called host ID.

Here is an example of a IPV4 address.

11100101.10001011.00010111.000000010
      Network ID                  Host ID

It is not easier to remember the IP addresses in binary form. That's why equivalent decimal number is used for that. We can write the address like this.

229 • 139 • 23 • 2

Because of the increase of internet use now IPV6 address is used.
